Tesla Powershare

Turn your compatible Tesla into backup power for your home.

Eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles use Powerwall 3 and a compatible Wall Connector to extend home backup. BD Electrical & Solar helps plan the complete system.

Vehicle-to-home backup

Put your parked vehicle to work.

Powershare enables a compatible Tesla to supply energy during an outage. With Powerwall 3, an eligible vehicle adds stored energy to your home’s backup system.

BD starts with your existing equipment, electrical service and essential loads. We plan charging, storage and backup together so the installation fits your household.

Check Your Vehicle

Confirm Powershare support before choosing equipment.

Confirm your configuration

Which Teslas can use Powershare?

Check your vehicle touchscreen: Software > Additional Vehicle Information > Powershare Support must show Enabled. All Cybertrucks qualify; some earlier Model 3 and Model Y vehicles also qualify. Model year alone does not establish eligibility.

Tesla’s product FAQ includes new US and Puerto Rico Model 3/Y orders on October 1, 2026 or later, while its footnote and support page say after October 1. Confirm an October 1 order directly with Tesla. Model S and Model X are not listed in the current compatibility table.

With Powerwall 3

Eligible Cybertruck, Model 3 or Model Y, plus Wall Connector 3 or Universal Wall Connector. Follow the setup checklist below before enabling backup.

Without Powerwall

Cybertruck uses a Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector; a Backup Switch may suit some installations.

Existing Powerwall

Tesla lists Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility as coming soon. BD will verify current support for your equipment.

Start with what you own

Already have Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector?

Your compatible setup may already contain the required hardware. Tesla says no additional equipment is needed with the supported Powerwall and Wall Connector combination. BD reviews equipment, wiring, configuration and commissioning needs before recommending work.

Get your system ready

  1. Confirm vehicle Powershare support and compatible home equipment.
  2. Connect Powerwall and Wall Connector to the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Register both devices to the same site and pair them.
  4. Contact Tesla Support to enable Powershare once the requirements are met.

Planning to add Powerwall as well? Tesla recommends installing Powerwall first to avoid additional electrical work.

How home backup works

From your vehicle’s battery to your home.

During an outage, a supported Powershare system uses energy from your plugged-in vehicle to help supply the home’s backed-up circuits.

With Powerwall 3

An eligible Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck connects through Wall Connector 3 or Universal Wall Connector to extend home backup. No separate Powershare Gateway is required.

Without Powerwall

Cybertruck connects through Universal Wall Connector and Powershare Gateway to supply backed-up circuits. A Backup Switch may suit some installations.

What could stay on?

Refrigeration, lighting, internet and other selected loads can be part of the plan. Heating, air conditioning and well pumps require a review of starting demand and system capacity. Your home’s design determines what is backed up.

Simplified explanation of equipment roles—not an electrical wiring diagram. Required backup controls isolate the home from the utility during an outage. Vehicle eligibility, activation and the final equipment configuration must meet Tesla’s requirements.

Understand the energy budget

How long could your vehicle power your home?

Tesla’s support-page estimates provide a starting point for planning extended backup:

Vehicle Estimated backup duration
Cybertruck — all trims Over three days
Model 3 / Model Y Standard Up to two days
Model 3 / Model Y Premium and Performance Over two days

Source: Tesla Powershare Support, reviewed October 6, 2026. Estimates assume 30 kWh of daily household use and 90% vehicle charge. Actual duration depends on vehicle, available solar, starting charge, reserves and household consumption; these are not BD runtime guarantees.

Heating, well pumps and other major loads can change the result substantially. BD reviews essential circuits and the driving reserve you want to preserve.

Plan for an actual outage

More energy. A carefully sized system.

Runtime depends on vehicle charge, household demand, reserves and available solar. Extra vehicle energy does not remove the system’s power limits or guarantee a fixed backup duration.

Bring BD your vehicle details, panel photos, electric bill and existing solar or battery information. We will review the installation and outline the equipment, electrical work and commissioning needed.

Powershare Questions, Answered.

Does ordinary Tesla charging equipment automatically provide home backup?

No. Vehicle eligibility, supported equipment and system setup must all be confirmed. Installing a charging circuit alone does not establish home-backup capability.

What happens when I drive away?

The vehicle’s stored energy is unavailable to the home while it is disconnected. BD plans around the remaining Powerwall capacity, available solar and essential loads, while preserving the reserve you need for driving. A system without Powerwall cannot rely on the departing vehicle for backup.

Can I earn money exporting vehicle energy?

Powershare Grid Support is separate from outage backup and depends on participating regions and programs. Tesla currently says combined Powershare and Powerwall Grid Support optimization is unsupported. BD does not assume Massachusetts eligibility or export revenue when planning your backup system.
