Commercial Battery Energy Storage in Massachusetts

Battery storage starts with an operating objective. BD Electrical & Solar works with engineering and technology partners to evaluate commercial storage applications and define the electrical installation scope.

Decide what the battery needs to do before selecting it.

Demand management, solar integration, and backup power can require different designs and controls. A useful feasibility review connects interval usage data, the utility tariff, critical loads, site constraints, and operating priorities. Capacity alone does not establish the value of a storage system.

Our scope

What we plan and install

Demand & operating strategy

Review when the facility uses power and what drives its bill. Model the intended dispatch strategy before assuming that storage will reduce demand charges or energy costs.

Solar & electrical integration

Coordinate battery equipment, inverters, distribution, protection, metering, and controls with new or existing solar. Utility export and charging requirements influence the design.

Backup & critical loads

Identify the loads that need support and for how long. Backup requires suitable islanding and transfer equipment; a grid-connected battery is not automatically an outage solution.

Define feasibility before committing to equipment

Commercial storage projects require site-specific engineering and approvals. We coordinate the electrical scope with the project team, including equipment placement, interconnection, controls, installation, and commissioning responsibilities. Project proposals identify which design and construction services are included.

From assessment to installation

01

Establish the use case

Gather interval usage data where available, electric bills, service drawings, outage priorities, and expansion plans. Set measurable operating goals.

02

Evaluate design & approvals

Coordinate system sizing, equipment location, utility review, local permitting, fire-safety requirements, and the intended controls. Confirm any program assumptions separately.

03

Build & validate operation

Install the agreed electrical infrastructure and coordinate inspections, commissioning, monitoring, and owner handoff with the equipment and engineering teams.

Planning questions

Can one system reduce bills and provide backup?

Potentially, but those goals compete for available energy. The design and operating settings must balance daily dispatch with the reserve required for outages.

Can a battery export or charge from the grid?

That depends on the equipment, interconnection agreement, utility requirements, and any program rules. The allowed operating modes must be confirmed for the specific project.

Are incentive payments or savings guaranteed?

No. Eligibility, rates, performance requirements, and economics are project-specific and may change. Financial projections should document their assumptions and be reviewed before investment.

How much storage does our facility need?

Sizing depends on both power demand and energy duration. The loads, operating schedule, desired runtime, and available installation area determine the appropriate system.
